Shanghai World Foreign Language Academy (SWFLA), founded in 1996, is a private secondary school renowned in Shanghai and across China for its academic excellence and strong reputation. Since 2005, it has been part of the Juneyao Group. The school was authorized by the IBO to offer the IB Middle Years Program in 2005 and the IB Diploma Program in 2009. In 2020, it gained approval from Cambridge Assessment International Education to provide A-level courses. SWFLA is not only an IB World School and a Cambridge A Level School but also one of Shanghai’s first bilingual model schools and a member of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network.
Under the leadership of its board, SWFLA aims to “cultivate modern Chinese citizens prepared for the global stage.” The school actively promotes holistic education, striving to nurture students with "Compassion, Elegance, and Magnanimity". Initially guided by the educational approach of “Participation & Practice” (P&P), the school has evolved to emphasize “Cooperation & Creativity” (C&C). Through its core values — fairness, openness, inclusiveness, gratitude, perseverance, and responsibility — and its mentorship system, SWFLA fosters innovation, collaboration, and overall personal growth. The school is committed to becoming a future-oriented, dynamic, and mission-driven prestigious school.
In the 2025–2026 academic year, the school has over 2,400 students and approximately 310 teachers, including nearly 20 international faculty. The international high school division (Grades 10–12) has around 600 students and over 110 teachers, including more than 10 overseas teachers. Moreover, more than 20 teachers in the school have been honored with district-level or higher awards for excellence, and the school is among the first in Xuhui District to be designated a Teacher Professional Development Model School. The IBDP department has 43 IB examiners, including one principal examiner, covering subjects such as Chinese A, English A/B, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Management, History, Second Foreign Languages, Visual Arts, and TOK.
The school’s Internationally Integrated High School Curriculum is an experimental program that adapts the IBDP and A-Level courses to a local context, blending their rigorous academics and international outlook with the core strengths of Chinese high school education. The balanced IBDP framework aims to cultivate well-rounded global citizens, while elements of the Chinese curriculum ensure a solid foundation in local culture. The Cambridge International AS & A Level program emphasizes in-depth learning, professional readiness, critical thinking, and communication skills, incorporating essential aspects of the IBDP core.
Beyond academics, the school emphasizes ability and character development through diverse activities and an inclusive campus culture. It offers an honors program focused on innovation, digital literacy, and language skills, designed to help students excel in a globalized and technology-driven world. Students are encouraged to initiate or join high-level research projects, inventions, and social practices, applying knowledge to real-world challenges. Events such as the English Festival, Reading Festival, Art Exhibition, and Second Foreign Language Culture Week provide platforms for cultural engagement and expression. A comprehensive Badge award system supports student development across academic, practical, service, and leadership dimensions. Through its robust and holistic approach, SWFLA continues to nurture outstanding and transformative talent.
The international high school program has achieved remarkable academic and university placement results. From 2021 to 2025, the average IBDP score for five consecutive graduating classes exceeded 39 points, peaking at 41.6 in 2021 and maintaining 40.1 in 2024 and 2025 — consistently 8–10 points above the global average for 11 years.
